Creating a Webmarketer project

As explained in the Workspace & billing section, Webmarketer projects have to be created inside a Webmarketer workspace.

info

If you do not have a workspace yet, you can create one for free (on the Free plan) once your Webmarketer account is created.

Design & data separation

Before creating your project, we suggest reading about the Project concept and the data scope of projects in Webmarketer.

Data quality

Collecting first-party data and sharing user identification works best when your brand's properties are grouped under the same root domain.

If you set up a Webmarketer project to work across several domains, you lose the benefit of identifying a user across your various websites. Reconciliation remains possible, however:

  • if the user performs an event carrying identifying information (an email address, say)
  • if the user is authenticated through an internal identifier (a user account ID upon signing in, say)

To learn more, see the Cross-domain tracking section.

Creating the project

On your workspace home page, click "+ Create a new project". A dialog opens with the basic information needed to create your project.

Project name

This field is where you enter the name of your Webmarketer project. That name is only used for display in the Webmarketer interface and will not appear in the scripts you add to your website.

You are free to use letters, numbers or even special characters.

Recommendation

Since a Webmarketer project traces your users' customer journey with your brand, we recommend entering the name of that brand.

Identifier

Your project's identifier is what tells it apart from every project managed by Webmarketer, so it has to be unique across all Webmarketer users.

A suggestion is generated automatically from the project name you entered, and you are free to change that suggestion if you want. Format: it can only be made of lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens ("-").

info

That identifier is visible in the collection scripts inserted into your website(s). If you use the API, that identifier is used to give your requests their context.

caution

Note that your project's identifier cannot be changed once created.

Domain name

This is the root domain name (without a subdomain) you are going to collect your visitors' information for.

The value entered in this field is used to:

  • Define which domains count as the origin of a new session (referring domains excluded)
  • Create your tracking subdomain, useful to reduce the losses caused by ITP (see Tracking configuration)

If you plan to use several root domains within the same project, enter the main root domain.

Currency

Sets your project's reference currency.

Converting all of your ad spend into a reference currency is essential to analyze and fairly compare the performance of your campaigns. To learn more, see the Currency handling page.

The reference currency can be changed later on. That operation requires converting all of your project's data, however, and can take several hours depending on the volume.

Website type

The website type tells Webmarketer about the topology of your website, so it can help you create your project by automatically creating the first resources commonly needed for your type of website. That setup can then be adjusted to suit the specifics of your organization and the data you collect.

Whenever in doubt, feel free to contact our support team to help you choose.

Three website types are available:

E-commerce type

The e-commerce mode suits e-commerce websites and initializes your project with the fields and events an e-commerce site typically needs:

User fields:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • External system ID

Statistic data:

  • Revenue
  • Products per cart

States:

  • Order paid
  • Order refunded

Reporting the states of your orders lets you analyze, for instance, which acquisition lever generates the most order cancellations.

Event types

  • Order
  • Newsletter
  • Contact
  • Sign-up
  • Login (reconciling)
  • Add to cart (reconciling)

Showcase website type

The showcase website type suits showcase websites geared towards getting in touch or generating leads, and initializes your project with the fields and events such a website typically needs:

User fields:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • External system ID

Statistic data:

  • Revenue

States:

  • Converted

Event types

  • Newsletter
  • Contact

Other type

When the Other type is chosen, Webmarketer only creates the most common user fields plus one statistic, and leaves you to create your own events and states:

User fields:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • External system ID

Statistic data:

  • Revenue

Customization

Should you initialize your project with a project type, note that every resource created can be changed afterwards to suit your needs.

Once your selection is made, you can click "Create". Your project will be ready and configurable within about ten seconds 🎉

You can then start configuring tracking ➡️
